How to Prepare for Your Dental Appointment
Booking a regular dental appointment is a must to achieve and maintain optimum oral health. It is usually recommended that you get at least two check ups per year. These appointments are essential for your health, since oral health is essentially a barometer of overall health. You may need to go more often, if it is your dental professional’s recommendation to do so.
There are ways to prepare for your dental appointment to ensure that you have a positive experience each and every time. There are several things to keep in mind when you do so. Some of them you may have never considered before:
1) Always be sure to brush and floss thoroughly to prepare for your dental appointment. This will give the hygienist an accurate example of your hygiene technique, and will allow her/him to make appropriate recommendations for improving your routine. It also shows that you are considerate as well! You don’t want to present with particles of food on your teeth, and the smell of garlic on your breath!
2) When you prepare for your dental appointment, schedule it mindful of the fact that it is to be a positive, healthful occasion. Book it for the time of day that you are at your best. For women, it is a good idea to book at a time when PMS is not an issue.
3) When you prepare for your dental appointment, it is important to keep the ingestion of water and other liquids to a minimum. It will serve to keep you comfortable during your appointment, and reduce the necessity of having to interrupt the examination in order to go to the bathroom. It will allow you to feel more at ease during the procedure.
4) Another way to prepare of your dental appointment is to refrain from eating for at least a couple hours beforehand. This will assist in keeping you relaxed and comfortable. You will not have to worry about experiencing the discomforts of indigestion. If you have a minimum amount or no food in your system to digest, you will most likely be able to feel more comfortable during your examination, and therefore have a better time being able to relax for what procedures you are to undergo.
5) It is important to avoid consuming foods that you may be allergic to at least 24 hours beforehand when preparing for your dental appointment. This will keep the likelihood of an allergic reaction, as well as the resulting symptoms, such as sneezing or coughing, from interfering with the progress of your dental appointment.
If you are like most people, the thought of having to prepare for a dental appointment fills you with anxiety- even dread. Most people appreciate the benefits of healthy teeth and gums, but the build up to each actual appointment often causes a great deal of anxiety and stress.
You may be someone who avoids sharing this with your dentist, as you may only be aware nitrous oxide gas as a sedation method, but there are other options.
You have the option of taking an oral sedative, either the night before or the day of the dental appointment. Patients also have the option of intravenous sedatives, as well as the nitrous oxide. Remember, however, that sedation does not eliminate the necessity of other drugs. It is used to address anxiety only.
Having investigated what is involved in preparing for a dental appointment has been an enormous help to many patients, and you may actually look forward to the occasion, especially to getting your teeth cleaned. Nothing beats the feeling of your teeth being newly cleaned and polished when you go to your dental appointment!
